American Dad Does anybody watch it?

topic posted Tue, October 10, 2006 - 3:55 PM by  Hos
I tried watching it a few times but had trouble due to it being on right after FG. I definately enjoy FG more than AD but I just picked up the AD First series on DVD for the heck of it. After you watch it a bit you stop comparing it to FG it ends up being pretty darn funny. Many similarities (animation, duh) between AD and FG in both writing and production (music, scenes, etc.) but if you like FG you are going to like AD. "Roger" the alien (who talks and acts like Paul Lynn) is kind of a Stewie-light but funny.

Just uh ...throwin` that out there.

I like American Dad a lot. It's funny, but in a different way from FG.

I love Roger and the Dad. They're both great characters. And the other family members round them out nicely. LOVE the fact that Patrick Stewart is on... he's just absurdly awesome as the head of the CIA!!! :-)

And all the crazy shite they keep adding is great! Like how Roger crapped the lump of gold and this creepy drama story-line started that has nothing to do with anything.... genius.

I watch it as well. It is different than Family Guy but stands on its own.

I too watch it. I'm glad I can watch it on DVD and dont' have to have it right next to Family Guy. That's why I didn't like it at first. It's a quality show though

Absolutely. The only thing similar is the animation. It's a different beast altogether, but totally worth the watch. Great one liners also!

I may get lynched for saying this, but both Family Guy and American Dad are WAAAAYY too McFarlane-heavy. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy his work, but that guy is so in love with his own voice. He does too many voices on his own and so both shows end up being a showcase for his sexy baritone vibrato.

That's my only gripe. Who'll throw the first stone?

I see what you're saying, but I think you misjudge the guy.

              Sorry, just watched LIfe Aquatic.

Seriously though, you can't really blame him for it. Both shows obviously work as they are, and it's not overly noticable for most people. I didn't know how many voices he did until I saw a video of him speaking at Harvard.

My question is how much of the writing does he do, or does he lean on other writers a lot? If he's doing all the writing and so many voices, you'd think at some point the show would run out of steam. South Park certainly isn't having a problem with that though. Maybe this cartoon satire is easier than I think it is.

AD & FG together make for a DEADLY combination!! I used to be a Simpsons fan untill those writers decided to turn Lisa Simpson into someone that I completely despise!!! The Simpsons it WAAAAAYYYYY too "issue oriented" for me to stomach... much like King of the Hill... while FG and AD does not come off as too preachy (although there were some tense moments in a couple of episodes on both). But AD was CREATED to lampoon politics, so I can tolerate it. FG, however, has made me begin to quiver in fear at the way Brian seems to be "transforming" this season into a PINKO... which disturbs me, especially in the "Hell Comes to Quahog" episode regarding his feelings/beliefs toward WAL-MART, and the "Saving Private Brian" eposode with his disdain for the U.S. Army. Were he an actual, real-life character (and no, not a DOG), I'd tell him what I tell everyone else whose left-winged, Berkley-esque, Flower-child beliefs come into play... AMERICA... LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!! RELAX! It's just humor!!!
