What about American Dad?

Does the resurrection of The Family Guy mean American Dad is doomed? I can't imagine they'd have time to do both.

I hope so, that show is weak, and it can only take time away from focusing on producing FG

I agree that American Dad was very weak, but it amused me anyway and made a powerful political statement. I thought it might improve with experience. (The first Simpsons cartoons were really pretty lame... "Who wants Chocolate Frosty Milkshakes?" It was like the actors were just practicing with funny voices and no script.)

And is that really Seth MacFarlane singing? Wow.

But, if I have to choose, FG wins hands down. But I really want both. There never will be enough Seth MacFarlane.

I've gotten a chance to see the AD episodes a number of times now, and each time it seems more and more obvious what the actual differences are and the depth of many of those.

American Dad, from what I can see so far in its early stages, almost seems like a collection of ideas and jokes that would ordinarily not be appreciated by fans of the Family Guy series nor would they fit in the show, particularly in the context and setup of FG. Much of the FG humor seems pop-culture based (references to movies, movie stars, music, etc.) AD tends to lean to a more, yeah, political and cultural stance.

Put it this way. Take the Family Guy humor and make the dad a CIA operative. Put in a pinch of conspiracy theory, the accuracy of the following of things like: Burning Man, government plots, and the voice of Charles Nelson Rielly(sp) as a closet-case alien, to mention a few.

And it is true that American Dad has some developing to do.
And they should definately be on different nights. Let AD gather its own following. Many FG fans will be there. Some won't. Some AD fans aren't even FG fans (twisted, huh?).

And there never will be enough Seth MacFarlane!

I would like AD to be re-tooled (and not just the disturbingly empty tighty-whities in the opening sequence). Seems like a character like Dad (name?) could have his family replaced pretty easily, no questions asked.

I believe the fish (Gunter?) was a german spy who was trapped in the fish body, perhaps through a CIA-style blunder by Dad. The character could be much deeper.

The dorky boy is just not as appealing as Meg Griffin. I find myself glad he's unpopular, and having been one of those kids myself, I feel really sick about it.

And the daughter reminds me of Marilyn Munster, the outcast "normal" in the group, with absolutely nothing interesting about her.

A good thing about FG is that every character has some individual, quirky qualities that make each one appealing. As vacuous as Chris is, he still seems nice, and disturbed in a rather attractive way. Who wouldn't love Stewie (or else!), and who among us isn't Meg? And a drunken, bitter Snoopy is a dog after my own heart! Also, each character has implied depth to make me keep watching: who really is Stewie's father, and what will be become? What did happen to Lois at the circus? AD doesn't have anything to connect the characters to the audience. I guess they don't want to make the fascists likeable.

I hope they kill American Dad. It is a waste of resources and time!

Excellent... I'm really starting to like American Dad. It just became a matter of getting used to the characters. I do think they can lose the fish though... the rest of the characters are pretty solid. IMHO (I really like the alien)

arrested development? funny show. wish it weren't moving to mondays.

american dad is weak. there's some nuggets of humor in it but overall it just lacks the punch and pizazz that family guy does. i think we should try not to compare the two even though it's hard not to considering the origins of both.

I agree. I don't watch american dad anymore. It just breaks my funny bone. Family Guy is good but I think that its a bit more.....i don't know plain silly humor. What I really enjoy is when FG relates somehting back to a TV show or something.

FG is *ALL* spoofs of old TV shows. Very well done, clever, irreverant spoofs, non-stop. If you go 3 minutes without seeing one, you didn't watch enough TV as a kid.

Lately I've found American Dad to be funnier than Family Guy, I think because they go for more situational humor, where Family Guy is trying too hard to wring laughs out of extended gags that end up going nowhere.

And why is there a reference to Indiana Jones in every episode of FG now?

Also, the alien character on AD is quite definitely meant to be Paul Lynde.

After I "discovered" FG I tried to watch AD but it fell short of what I had gotten used to in FG. Currently, I am watching the entire first season of AD on DVD and I am surprised at how funny and clever this show really is. It shouldn`t be compared to FG,even though it is technically the same in many ways. AD gets better when you get used to the characters and the continuity of the series. I find myself really enjoying it very much. Like others have posted it is more political and culteral than FG but the tried and true FG formula works well in this content. All in all I am pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying this series now that I am not comparing/contrasting it to FG. I find it almost as much fun as when I was new to FG(...well,not 'almost' maybe). Take a chance on American Dad.
